Belts and the Art of Bracing Yourself

A scandal is when we are caught with our pants down where we shouldn’t be caught. That’s why we have belts (or locked rooms) Suspenders are not retro, chic, groovy…they are not worth wearing. However, if you do wear them, don’t wear a belt simultaneously
Belt Shopping

When belt-shopping, always think of the pants, jeans, slacks and other items of the belted family in your wardrobe. They will share a binding, colour coordinated relationship with the belt, and must get along.

An efficient way to buy a stylish belt is to choose the timeless ‘subtle buckle’ look. Not too big or flashy, no logos, and a woven leather strap in black, leather, or tan colours. Don’t let money compromise with quality; a high quality, well maintained belt can last a lifetime.

When shopping for casual belts, don’t buy shiny, tacky, funny belts. Buckles are belts biggest PR.

As obvious as this sounds, remember to try out your belt for size before buying it.

Buy a belt 2 inches larger than your actual waistline because most people gain weight at the abdomen before any body part. Even if you do plan to remain 30 inches forever, the size of the buckle adds 2 inches to the belt even if you don’t.

After picking it off the rack, ensure that it doesn’t allow sags or gaps in the loops. A tryout is also good to find out if your belt needs a new hole. Do not jab in a hole with a sharp object at home; have it professionally done at a shoe repair place. A rough, whiskery hole looks awful and reduces its lifespan.
